June 6, 1944 remembered
American Rhetoric is a site devoted to American speeches. Public speaking is unique in its capacity to move and inspire people in ways different from written literature. The site is searchable and has representative speeches from many traditions and perspectives. Some are available in streaming audio and video as well as text. Here is an example appropriate for today, sixty-two years after the Invasion of Normandy. You can download it as an MP3 or video file. Another shorter example but no less forceful is here. We might use these words to remember what has changed and what has stayed the same in sixty-two years.
